Most residents of Vancouver Island are not aware that they share their island with one of the rarest mammals on earth, the Vancouver Island marmot, Marmota vancouverensis. The search to find the rare species, thought to be declining due to lack of habitat, was supported by ELSA as early as 1980. This endangered species is also getting significant support from the Toronto Zoo in its endangered species rearing program, a project currently being undertaken by ELSA for five years.
